Public libraries still serve a good purpose

When was the last time you visited our public library? Many people today think that with information at our fingertips, libraries are becoming obsolete. You could have almost included me among that group of people a few short weeks ago.

I am a public school teacher who needed something to keep me busy over the summer months. Just to keep my sanity, I offered my services as a summer tutor.

I felt the public library was a safe meeting area with resources available if needed. What I have observed during my many hours spent there this summer is that our library is far from obsolete.

In addition to the annual summer reading program offered, I observed so many other wonderful things happening. There are many events held at the library, from magic shows to music, entertaining and educating children of all ages. Even messy art projects. They have events and clubs for children, teens and adults. I have seen young families, elderly people and many developmentally disabled individuals with caretakers enjoying the library this summer. There is even a cool teen only area with books of their level and interest and even board games that can be played. I have also noticed that many apparently homeless members of our community also enjoy the library. Whether they are using computers to look for work or just enjoying the cool indoors, it is nice to see.

Despite all of the amazing things happening at our library the people are even better. Day in and day out I see a busy library full of a variety of people with many needs, the staff greets them all with a smile and helps in any way they can. If you haven’t been in a while, it is time to visit our library.
