Warden-area fire contained at 300 acres

Even though they faced 107 degree weather Thursday afternoon, fire fighters, law enforcement and farmers contained a wildfire to 300 acres.

The fire broke out Thursday afternoon in the area of West Providence Road and Howard Road. Lind Fire District No. 2 was initially dispatched to the blaze, which was burning mainly wheat stubble and standing wheat, and local farmers used tractor discs to cut a fire line to stymy the blaze.

Lind Fire District No. 2 Chief Kevin Starring said burning wheat can jump dozens of feet into the air and that aid from farmers helped to keep the fire from jumping.

“When that stuff’s in standing wheat, the flames are 20, 30 feet at times creating their own winds with fire whirlwinds,” said Starring. “With a little bit of breeze and as dry as it is, it’s very difficult to get around and get it put out if you don’t have some kind of fireline.”

Mutual aid was provided by Grant County Fire District No. 4. There was no reported injuries or structures destroyed.
