The Huskies were looking to snap a two-game skid when Quincy came to town for a CWAC showdown Saturday. But their hopes were dashed as the Jacks proved to be the superior team on the pitch in the 4-0 win over Othello.

“We had a terrible start to the game and an even worst finish — it was one of our worst games this year,” coach Bernie Garza said. “But we will learn from this and get better and correct the mistakes.”

The Huskies first miscue came just two minutes into the fuss when Othello committed an own goal to put the Jacks up early.

The second mistake allowed a goal off a breakaway to make it 2-0 at the 8:30 mark. The score held up through intermission.

The third Quincy goal of the contest came with a little more than 10 minutes left in the match.

“We had a miscommunication between our last defender and our goalkeeper and they both ran into each other,” Garza said. “The Quincy player just had to pass the ball in for the easy goal.”

The Jacks last goal found the back of the Othello box with less than a minute to go.

“Their fourth goal came on another mistake in which our goalie froze and thought the Quincy player was off sides,” Garza said. “He did not react to the play and just stood there at goal and the Quincy player scored and was not called off sides.”

The loss to the Jacks drops Othello to 1-4 in conference play and into a tie for seventh place in the standings with four games left in the regular season. The top six teams qualify for postseason play so the Huskies now find themselves a precarious position as they need to win out or get some help along the way to make the playoffs.

“We have to basically win the last four league games and hope that other teams lose some games,” Garza said. “We are shooting for a 5-4 record and earning the fifth or sixth spot for the district playoffs. We have the talent to do so, but need more consistency in our defense and we need more shots from our offensive players in order to win those games.”

Othello has a chance to right the ship at home Wednesday when the 3-2 Ellensburg Bulldogs come calling. The match is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start.
