Vote 'yes' on school levy

| April 12, 2018 3:00 AM

I am writing this in request for leadership support to vote “yes” for the upcoming school levy in the Moses Lake School District. Levies last three years. Our current levy is $4.62 but in order to be in compliance with recent state law, we need to replace it with the $1.50 levy. It would be absurd to not put $3.12 back in our pocket. The state has an “equalization fund,” basically a matching fund where we will make up what we get to keep in our pockets. If we don’t pass this replacement levy, we will lose the “equalization funds” and our current MLSD reserve funds are below national average.

In full picture, the current tax collection is $8.52 per $1,000 with the bond and currently levy. Please remember bonds are for building and levies are for learning. With the replacement levy, the tax collection will drop to $6.85 per $1,000. In final sum, we will be putting money back into our pockets.

These are most of the operations, educational programs and jobs we will help preserve for our children’s best interest: security, counseling, health services, music, arts, library, PE, extra athletics, graduation, Chromebooks, district-wide fifth-grade swimming lessons, transportation and maintenance.

My niece lost her dad a couple of years ago, and her greatest escape to help her cope and heal is her school library. Please help me keep that need alive for her.

Please vote “yes” and make sure you get your ballot signed and in the mail before April 20, so we can ensure it is properly postmarked and counted.

Because the heart of the school levy is our children.
