ROYAL CITY — Warden overcame travel and a new playing surface to outlast Royal 2-1.

Warden led 1-0 at halftime behind a goal from Ashlyn Yamane in the 38th minute. Grace Richins fed a through ball to Aubree Skone who scored the second goal in the 54th minute.

“This game was a very physical game, but our girls kept their composure,” Warden assistant coach Rachel Mohs said. “Our defense had an awesome game, pulling their forwards offsides numerous times.”

Royal had an opportunity to take an early lead.

Dani Lima receiver a low cross from six yards away, but the field turf gave the ball enough spin to force it wide of the near post.

Both teams were held scoreless for the majority of the first half.

Yamane finished a corner kick from Cathy Mendoza to give the Cougars a one-goal advantage after 40 minutes.

“Our keeper looked to have the shot covered, but a deflection off of the outstretched legs of one of our defenders wrong-footed her and Warden went into halftime up 1-0,” Royal head coach Jens Jensen said.

Skone added to Warden’s advantage about mid-way through the second half.

Royal made a final attempt at a rally when Noelia Juarez scored in the 78th minute.

“While we felt we had a great chance to get an equalizer, our excitement was disruptive to our focus and we began playing sloppy balls and the defensive shape was undisciplined,” Jensen said.
