Klaren (Karl) Shultz

January 6, 1941 – September 23, 2017

Klaren (Karl) Shultz, age 76, passed away Saturday, Sept. 23 at his home in Ephrata surrounded by his children Diana, Alan, and Tammy.

Karl was born Jan. 6, 1941 in Redmond, Ore., to Harold and Iris Shultz. The family moved to Kansas, where he grew up in Hutchinson with four brothers and one sister. Karl served four years in the United States Marine Corps from 1958 to 1962, which included a tour in Vietnam. Karl met the mother of his children and they wed in 1963 and moved to Washington state in 1967.

Karl started work with Vic Hoersch then later started his law enforcement career by joining Quincy Police Department in 1974 and continued with them until he became a member of the Grant County Sheriff’s Office in 1977. Karl started out at dispatch, as was required back then, as well as working as a field deputy and later became a detective, was promoted to sergeant and headed up INET as its sergeant where he was working when he retired for the first time in 1994.

After taking some time to travel and working as an owner/operator of Double II Investigations in Ephrata, he returned to work for the Grant County Prosecutors Office, and finally officially retired from the work force in 2004.

Karl then kept himself busy volunteering many hours at the American Legion Post 28 in Ephrata. He worked as bookkeeper, maintenance and official joke teller, served as treasurer for the Voiture 40&8, and was a member of the Honor Guard and sergeant-at-arms as well as commander of the post. He was also the service officer and served on the Executive Board.

Karl is preceded in death by his father and mother Harold and Iris, his stepfather Clifford Potter, brother Harold Shultz, sister Della Shultz Showalter and son Timothy Lee Shultz.

He is survived by three brothers Andy Shultz, Clark Shultz and Mark Shultz, all of Kansas; his children Diana Lynn of Nashville Alaska, Karl Alan of Wenatchee and Tamara Leigh of Ephrata; 10 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and countless nieces and nephews whom he loved with all his heart.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, Sept. 30, 2017 at 1 p.m. at the American Legion Post 28 in Ephrata.
