Bicycle helmets save lives

| September 27, 2017 3:00 AM

My son was riding home on his bicycle on Westshore Drive when he was run off the road by a truck. The driver left my son for dead. Another driver saw it happen, called 911 and then followed the driver to his home. He was drunk. He was arrested and his truck impounded. As reprehensible as driving intoxicated is, I am not writing about that. I am writing about what saved his life.

His helmet. His helmet was crushed. He would be dead. That would have been his head. The simple act of donning a helmet has been a habit since his first tricycle. That habit saved his life.

I can’t stop everyone I see not wearing a helmet to tell my son’s story. But I can share the story here in hopes that people will buy a helmet for themselves. For their children. The cost of a helmet is immeasurably small compared with the cost of the precious life of a loved one.
