Basin roundup: Moses Lake's Abby Rathbun announces verbal commitment to University of San Francisco

MOSES LAKE — Moses Lake’s Abby Rathbun will continue her basketball career in California.

The senior forward announced her verbal commitment to the University of San Francisco on Sunday via her mother Jennifer Rathbun’s Twitter account and her own Instagram account.

“Dreams do come true,” Jennifer Rathbun said in her tweet.

Abby Rathbun is the Chiefs’ defensive stopper and has improved her offensive repertoire each year of high school. Moses Lake has placed fifth, fourth and fifth at the Class 4A state tournament the past three seasons.

“Thank you to everyone who supported me the entire way,” Abby Rathbun said in an Instagram post.

The University of San Francisco women’s basketball program finished the 2016-17 season 18-13 and reached the second round of the West Coast Conference (WCC) Tournament.

The Dons are a member of the WCC, which includes Gonzaga University and Abby Rathbun’s former Moses Lake teammate Jessie Loera.

Abby Rathbun is the second Moses Lake player to announce a verbal commitment to a Division 1 university. Jamie Loera gave a verbal commitment to Arizona State University over the summer.

Moses Lake second in Varsity I race at Apple Ridge Invite

COWICHE — Moses Lake’s Zachery Owens set a personal record of 15 minutes, 54 seconds and won the three-mile Varsity I race at the Apple Ridge Invite.

Moses Lake took second behind Eastmont in the team standings with 102 points.

Joshua Cooper finished fourth in the second varsity race.

In the girls’ competition, Moses Lake’s Carlie Gregg finished first in the Varsity I race in 19:14.9. Teammate Camille Carpenter won the Varsity II race in 18:52.3.

QUINCY — Quincy lost a high-scoring affair to Grandview 9-2.

Ephrata 2-2 at home tournament

EPHRATA — Ephrata finished split four matches at its home tournament.

Ephrata outlasted Moses Lake in three sets 25-21, 29-27, 15-8; fell to Mountlake Terrace in three 19-25, 25-24, 17-25; lost to Zillah 25-12, 25-19; and beat Soap Lake 25-18, 25-17.

Laura Davis recorded seven kills in Ephrata’s win over Moses Lake.

College volleyball

Big Bend 0-3 at SPSCC Tournament

OLYMPIA — Big Bend volleyball finished 0-3 at the South Puget Sound Tournament.

Big Bend was swept by host South Puget Sound 25-14, 25-14, 25-14 to open tournament play. Big Bend extended its match with Olympic by winning the third set and almost the fourth, but lost 25-22, 25-20, 17-25, 27-25. Skagit Valley beat Big Bend 25-23, 25-18, 25-13 to close the weekend.

Against South Puget Sound, Maddy Powers totaled seven kills and Savannah Bass had 13 assists.
