Lutherans raise half a ton of food in drive

| September 15, 2017 3:00 AM

MOSES LAKE — Immanuel Lutheran Church in Moses Lake collected over 1,000 pounds of food last Sunday, according to a press release from the church. About 900 pounds of the food will go the Moses Lake Food Bank. The remainder was made into 100 food packs, which will be given to Serve Moses Lake to give out as lunches as needed. The drive was held in conjunction with a denomination-wide project called God’s Work Our Hands.

Originally, the drive was intended to bring in 500 pounds of food in recognition of 500 years of Reformed Catholicism, according to the release, but when the Sunday School children weighed the food, they found that twice that amount had been raised.

A one-man act entitled “Martin” about the life of Martin Luther was presented at the church the same afternoon as the food collection in the morning. On the last day of October Lutherans everywhere will celebrate the posting of 95 theses by Martin Luther in Germany on Oct. 31, 1517. This event had a major effect on European history, Christianity and the founding of America on the principle of religious freedom, the press release added.
