No. 20 Washington St beats Boise St 47-44 in 3 overtimes
PULLMAN, Wash. (AP) — Jamal Morrow caught a 22-yard pass and dove across the goal line in the third overtime to lift No. 20 Washington State to a 47-44 comeback victory over Boise State on Saturday night.
Officials reviewed the play to make sure Morrow remained inbounds as he ran toward the end zone and left his feet near the pylon. It was ruled a touchdown for Washington State (2-0), which trailed by 21 points in the fourth quarter.
Boise State quarterback Montell Cozart came off the bench to spark his team for the second game in a row, but the Broncos (1-1) could not hold a big lead late.
The Cougars trailed 31-10 early in the fourth but did not give up.
Both starting quarterbacks left the game. Cozart replaced Brett Rypien, and WSU’s Tyler Hilinski replaced an injured Luke Falk.
After Hilinski was intercepted by Durrant Miles at midfield, Cozart threw a 47-yard touchdown pass to Cedrick Wilson on the second play and Boise State led 24-10 early in the fourth.
Curtis Weaver recovered Falk’s fumble and ran 55 yards for a touchdown and a 31-10 BSU lead. Falk was injured on the play and did not return.
Washington State fought back with three touchdowns. Hilinski’s 17-yard scoring pass to Jamire Calvin, and Peyton Pelluer’s 36-yard return of an interception for a touchdown cut BSU’s lead to 31-24 with 5:51 left.
Washington State was forced to punt, but Erik Powell’s short kick hit Boise State player Reid Harrison-Ducros and was recovered by WSU’s Dillon Sherman on the BSU 24 with 2:51 left.
Hilinski threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Morrow, and Powell’s extra point tied the score at 31 with 1:44 left.
In overtime, Boise State had the first possession and Haden Hoggarth kicked a 29-yard field goal. Powell replied with a 22-yarder to tie it 34-all.
In the second overtime, Washington State’s Gerard Wicks scored on a 1-yard run for a 41-34 lead. Boise State responded with a 15-yard touchdown pass from Cozart to Wilson to tie it again.
In the third overtime, Hoggarth kicked a 37-yard field goal for a 44-41 Boise State lead. Hilinski hit Morrow on the left side and he outraced defenders to the pylon for the winning points.
No. 7 Washington does as expected, rolls Montana 63-7
SEATTLE (AP) — Dante Pettis weaved his way 67 yards for the seventh punt return touchdown of his career, Jake Browning threw for 259 yards and two touchdowns, and No. 7 Washington rolled past Montana 63-7 on Saturday night.
Pettis set a Pac-12 record, taking a punt back for a score for the second straight game. Pettis’ 61-yard return in the season opener against Rutgers last week tied him with DeSean Jackson for the Pac-12 mark and ignited Washington (2-0) after a sluggish start.
The conference record is Pettis’ alone now. Montana (1-1) made the unwise decision to punt to Pettis on the final play of the first quarter. The senior veered to the sideline nearest where he caught the kick, cut all the way across the field, juked Montana punter Eric Williams and sprinted the final few yards to give the Huskies a 21-7 lead.
Pettis is one shy of the NCAA record for punt return touchdowns in a career, held by Wes Welker (Texas Tech) and Antonio Perkins (Oklahoma).
While Pettis showed his creative elusiveness to help break the game open, he was also responsible for the one blemish on Browning’s otherwise spectacular stat line. A first-quarter pass intended for Pettis instead caromed off his hand and into the arms of Montana safety Josh Sandry, who returned it 36 yards to tie it at 7l. The defensive score briefly energized the Grizzlies, but it was short lived.
Browning was the biggest reason why. Given plenty of time on every snap, Browning finished 22 of 26 passing with only two of his incompletions hitting the turf. Browning also showed some elusiveness as a runner, rushing for a career-high 50 yards on five carries and a touchdown.
Anderson, Dunn help ND State pound E Washington 40-13
CHENEY, Wash. (AP) — Bruce Anderson and Lance Dunn combined for more than 300 yards rushing and four touchdowns, and North Dakota State rolled to a 40-13 win over Eastern Washington in a matchup of FCS powers on Saturday.
Anderson had 160 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries and Dunn picked up 148 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries. Easton Stick threw for 157 yards while the Bison defense stymied the Eagles.
Gage Gubrud, who set 18 Eastern Washington records and three FCS marks in passing for more than 5,000 yards last year, was 10 for 30 for 134 yards and two interceptions. The Eagles finished with 204 yards on offense and had just 11 first downs. The Bison had 31 first downs and held the ball for almost 43 minutes.
It was North Dakota’s first trip to EWU since falling 38-31 in overtime in the FCS playoffs in 2010. Eastern went on to win the national championship but the Bison won the next five. Last year, when NDSU beat the Eagles 50-44 early in the season, both teams lost in the semifinals.
Taking a 19-10 lead at the half, the Bison put the game away with three straight touchdown drives for a 40-13 lead with 12:32 to play.

Upton’s two-run double helps Angels beat Mariners 5-3
SEATTLE (AP) — Justin Upton had a two-run double in the eighth inning to help Los Angeles avoid a sweep with a 5-3 win over the Seattle Mariners on Sunday, moving the Angels one game out of the second wild card spot.
Mike Trout and Luis Valbuena had solo homers as Los Angeles moved a game behind Minnesota, which lost 11-3 to Kansas City.
Ben Rivera opened the eighth with a pinch-hit single to center off Nick Vincent (3-2), who relieved to start the inning. Brandon Phillips’ sacrifice moved Rivera to second and Trout was walked intentionally. Upton followed with a double to the gap in left-center to make it 4-2.
Upton advanced on Albert Pujols’ fly out and scored on a wild pitch by Marc Rzepczynski.
Jean Segura opened the bottom half with his ninth homer to pull Seattle to 5-3.
Cam Bedrosian (6-4) pitched a scoreless seventh for the victory. Blake Parker struck out the side in the eighth after Segura’s homer, and Yosmeiro Petit closed with a perfect ninth for his third save.
