Statistics year after year on childhood obesity are not encouraging. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that one in every five children in the United States is obese, with certain groups of children being more affected than others. There is no single or simple solution. However, National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month provides an opportunity for learning ways to prevent and address this serious health concern.

Children who are obese face more bullying and stigma from classmates and others. In, addition, children who become obese are more likely to remain obese as an adult which can lead to lifelong physical and mental health problems, including diabetes and increased risk of certain cancers.

One of CBHA’s long time physicians, Dr. Bashar Elali, was recently asked to name some things important to children’s overall health. His answer was plain and simple.

“More play, less TV, healthy food, and lots of physical activity,” he said. “It’s vitally important that children get enough sleep, plenty of exercise, and the right amount of calories. We also stress the importance of limiting the time children spend in front of computer screens”.

CBHA clinics have two registered nutritionists available to meet with parents and their children to demonstrate proper diets using play food.

“The kids think this is fun and we hope it helps them recognize healthy foods, fruits and veggies when they see them,” Dr. Elali said. “The activity also helps parents learn what goes into creating a healthy meal. Please give me a call at 509-488-5256 if you have any questions.”
