Prep roundup: Moses Lake XC qualifies 5 for state meet
YAKIMA — Moses Lake cross country was able to qualify five runners, two boys and three girls, for the state meet Nov. 4 at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.
Zachery Owens and Joshua Cooper finished sixth and 10th, respectively, in the boys’ race. Owens clocked in at 16:29.65 and Cooper was just behind in 16:39.95.
Moses Lake girls put a trio of sophomores into the top 15: Camille Carpenter (ninth), Carlie Gregg (12th) and Mikayla Cooper (14th). Carpenter finished in 20 minutes, 3.85 seconds. Gregg recorded a time of 20 minutes, 12.73 seconds and Cooper crossed the finish line in 20 minutes, 16.06 seconds.
Traditional power Eisenhower dominated the meet, finishing first in both team standings. The Cadet boys totaled 24 points and Jonas Price won the boys’ race in 15 minutes, 25.88 seconds. West Valley nabbed the second team state berth, edging Eastmont 60-61. Moses Lake was fourth with 111 points.
Likewise in the girls’ competition, Eisenhower won comfortably with 45 points. Wenatchee finished second with 84 and Moses Lake was fifth with 102.
Eisenhower’s Erica Simison won the race in 18 minutes, 41.29 seconds.
Girls soccer
Ephrata 1, Selah 0
SELAH — Ephrata stunned No. 2 seed Selah 1-0 to advance to the CWAC District Championship Oct. 31 against East Valley at Grandview High School.
Both teams went back and forth throughout the game until about mid-way through the second half when Ephrata began to control possession more consistently.
Mya Spencer scored the game’s lone goal off an assist from Lynette Sanchez in the 71st minute.
East Valley upset top-seeded Ellensburg 2-1 in the other semifinal.
Moses Lake 7, Sunnyside 0
SUNNYSIDE — Morgan Skone tallied five assists and Moses Lake handled Sunnyside 7-0.
Abby Rathbun was on the end of three of Skone’s assists. The senior captain finished with four goals and two assists of her own.
The Chiefs led 4-0 at halftime as Rathbun completed her hat trick in the 34th minute.
Madi Krogh, Gabi Avalos and Claire Hopkins scored one goal each.
Moses Lake will host Sunnyside in a Columbia Basin Big Nine play-in game on Saturday that is tentatively scheduled for noon.
