I asked Mikey, my brother, “How are you?” Every time his reply would be “Unbelievable.” As he lay in the hospital bed dying, “How are you?” “Unbelievable.” My brother was someone I could lean on, talk to about anything without being judged, endlessly optimistic and at times frustratingly private. Mike left seven sisters, six gorgeous kids, a ton of beautiful grandchildren, close friends and enough carnage in bad choices to overwhelm even the hardest of hearts, but Mike made one good choice that I know of. Mike reconciled his accounts with Jesus. Having come up so short on honesty, truth and humility, Jesus stepped in and paid the debt in full, because Jesus came for sinners just like my brother and all of us. My greatest hope is that Mike’s first words in heaven will be “Unbelievable.” Thank you, Jesus, for your mercy and for my big brother. Rest in peace, Mikey. I love you.
