Donovan and Ochoa have been good for Moses Lake schools

| October 19, 2017 1:00 AM

I support the re-election of Kevin Donovan and Oscar Ochoa as Moses Lake School Directors. Both are effective, knowledgeable and committed to creating the best schools possible. Kevin, an established businessman in our community, has overseen the budgets and expenditures so well the district, after years of trying, exceeded its goal of 8.8 percent cash reserves for the last three years. This reserve helped the district receive a high bond rating, which reduces the interest on bonds sold for school construction. At the same time, the district, under tremendous growth pressure, has, again during Kevin’s time, constructed two new elementary schools, a transportation center, the tech center, a building to house the swimming pool and a warehouse facility. All were on time and under budget, unusual in the best of circumstances. The final two were funded because of strong fiscal management of the first buildings on that list. Kevin understands the incredibly difficult school funding and budgeting process.

Oscar has consistently proved himself an advocate for our kids, has shown leadership, and has been a strong voice for all kids. In the early 1990s, fresh from college, Oscar served as youth pastor in the community and came to work as an educational assistant at MLHS where he had a huge impact on the ELL and migrant programs. Oscar continues to serve the needs of all kids in the district and community. He was a leader with the MLHS Boosters, for example. His presence on the board has positively impacted all kids, but particularly underserved populations. Parents know they have Oscar as a strong advocate. Watching him move to the audience and explain quietly a difficult issue to parents with limited English skills speaks strongly to his important role as a School Director.

Performance matters more than promises.
