Basin roundup: Ramirez new head boys soccer coach for MLHS
MOSES LAKE — Long-time assistant Richie Ramirez will be the new varsity head boys soccer coach for Moses Lake.
Ramirez has been spent 13 years as an assistant — six with the Chiefs’ girls team and seven with the boys.
Ramirez graduated from Moses Lake High School in 2008 and played soccer at Columbia Basin College.
Former head coach Rian Allred spent two years with Moses Lake. The Chiefs finished 3-11-1 last season.
Cross country
Ephrata boys, girls take CWAC meet
TOPPENISH — Ephrata boys edged Grandview and Othello to finish first in Wednesday’s CWAC cross country meet in Ephrata.
The Tigers totaled 49 points and the Huskies had 51.
Othello’s David Maldonado finished third in 17:48. Ephrata sophomore Riley Noga took fourth in 18:38.
Ephrata girls cross country had 26 points to finish first; Othello was third with 72.
Ephrata’s Dagney Ahrend won the varsity race in 21 minutes, 53 seconds.
Slowpitch softball
Moses Lake 25-12, Eisenhower 7-3
YAKIMA — Brooke Richardson homered twice in the opener and Moses Lake swept Eisenhower 25-7 and 12-3.
Moses Lake finished the regular season as the No. 2 seed and will play West Valley in the semifinals of the league tournament on Tuesday.
College volleyball
Blue Mountain 3, Big Bend 0
PENDLETON, Ore. — Big Bend was swept by Blue Mountain 25-17, 25-18, 25-21.
Ryana Recustodio led the Vikings with six kills. Savannah Bass had 18 assists and eight digs.

Big Bend wins second consecutive President’s Cup
MOSES LAKE — Big Bend Community College student-athletes were recognized for exceptional academics.
Big Bend won its second consecutive President’s Cup, the third time winning the award in five years.
Big Bend finished first in the Dick McClain division for schools with seven or fewer sports. Big Bend competes in volleyball, women’s basketball, men’s basketball, baseball and softball.
Big Bend has won the award in 2012-13, 2015-16 and 2016-17; the institution finished second in 2013-14 and 2014-15.
Walla Walla placed first in the Frank Bosone Division — schools that compete in eight or more sports.
