Reader weighs in on Second Amendment

Dear Mr. Kirkpatrick,

I guess it is freedom of speech that gets 1,000-plus word opinions from other parts of the U.S. into our local paper. We do need to know what is being taught around the country.

The Nov. 8, 2017 issue carried an article that seems to be suggesting that our government now strike the Second Amendment of the Bill of Rights from our National Constitution.

Guns don’t kill people any more than cars do. When a terrorist uses a car, truck or van as a weapon of choice to kill someone, we don’t blame the automobile.

The columnist is right, though. We do need to turn our nation back to “one nation, under GOD”.

I am a Washingtonian. I like what Ed Carlson (from Vancouver, Wash.) had to say. I’m a U.S. Army Vet. I was in Vietnam. We were there to help their government protect their people from the invasion from the North (the invaders that attacked while I was at Cu Chi were from China). The returning soldiers were excoriated. That was good news in the mid to late 60’s ‘cause bad news sells.

So...we do need to get back to individual rights and being responsible for our actions. In the 60’s the word was “If it feels good, do it.” It was okay to destroy our neighbors and our society if we wanted to. So, we teach our kids in school how to do what they want, not that there are consequences. And if a baby is conceived we can just kill it — one million per year in America — and tax payers are forced pay for that abortion whether they think it’s acceptable or not.

So, listen to the successes of the past. Do as you would have others do to you. Take responsibility for all of your actions. Turn it around. Go back to the principles of our Founding Fathers.

I believe in giving people a second chance, but I also believe in capital punishment for people who commit murder. There must be consequences to pay for such deliberate acts.
