Springfest kicks off summer

| May 25, 2017 3:00 AM

Unless you've been hiding under a rock (or just haven't been in Moses Lake), you've seen a lot of activity at McCosh Park and Lions Field the last few days. That's the preparations for Springfest, the blowout celebration with which Moses Lake kicks off summer every year.

There'll be a carnival, lots of vendors and more kinds of food than you can shake a taste bud at. There are also fun runs, a 3-on-3 basketball tournament and a parade. (Two of them, in fact, one just for the kids.) Then there's a car show, a beer garden, and performances both professional and amateur. Moses Lake knows how to throw a community celebration.

This being Memorial Day weekend, there's also a serious side. Lots of folks will be out at the cemetery planting flowers on graves, whether of their own loved ones or of strangers. Remembering those who died in their country's service is both an honor and a solemn duty.

While you're getting from Point A to Point B, be aware Click It or Ticket is underway and law enforcement will be watching in hawk-like fashion for drivers and passengers on the road without seat belts or proper child restraints. Nothing ruins a festival like not living through it, but even a citation can bring your enjoyment down. And of course, they'll also be keeping an eye out for drivers who have had a drink or two over the line. So buckle up, sober up and let's not give them anything to pull us over for.

See you at Springfest!
