Quincy trucker dies in collision near Othello

| May 17, 2017 4:00 AM

OTHELLO — A truck driver from Quincy died in a collision about 5 miles south of Othello Monday afternoon.

About 1:35 p.m., Miguel Penado, 58, of Quincy was driving a 2010 International ProStar semi-truck north on state Route 17, when the semi reportedly left the road to the west. The semi lost its trailer and continued parallel to SR-17 until it struck a fence and power pole, according to the Washington State Patrol.

The semi came to a rest in a yard and the vehicle reportedly became fully engulfed in flames against a pine tree about 50 feet off SR-17, threatening a nearby home. Penado died at the scene. Fire crews responded to the scene and were able to put out the fire before the residence was damaged.

SR-17 was closed for several hours as police investigated the collision. The patrol is investigating the collision’s cause.
