Maggie Delay wins three events at Ray Cross invite
EPHRATA — All six prep track and field teams from the Sun Tribune area competed at the Ray Cross Invitational Saturday and found it to be one of the toughest meets anywhere.
Only the Royal girls placed high as a team, taking fourth place with 41 points. They were led by the 31 points posted by super senior Maggie Delay.
In boys competition, Royal scored five points and Wahluke got two. Othello was shut out. The Wahluke and Othello girls were shut out.
There were more than 20 schools, and many of them were of the big variety. Richland took first among the boys, Ferris second and Central Valley third. On the girls side, it was Central Valley in first, followed by St. George’s and Cheney.
Delay was dominant. She won the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.47. She took first in the pole vault with a personal record mark of 10-6, and she finished first in the triple jump with an effort of 34-7-5.
Royal’s 800 and 1600 relays finished fifth with times of l:55.34 and 4:25.28. The 800 quartet included Gracelynn Miller, Abigail Delay, Kay Lester and Noelia Juarez. Maggie Delay substituted for Lester on the 1600 team.
The Royal girls got three points from Juarez for her sixth place finish in the 400 in a school record time of 1:02.37. She finished just out of the money in the 200 with a school record clocking of 28.04.
Kay Lester posted school records 2:38.31 in the 800 and 5:50.86 in the 1600. She finished 12th and 11th respectively.
Alma Velasco of Wahluke ran a personal record 12:59.98 for 11th in the 3200. Abbey Yorgesen of the Warriors finished 12th in the high jump, but she posted the same mark, 4-10, as the eighth-place winner.
The Royal boys got five points from Arturo Villa with fourth place in the 110 hurdles. Fernando Soto of the Knights finished 12th in the 300 hurdles.
