WALLA WALLA — Big Bend opened NWAC East play with two losses at Walla Walla.

180 feet away from the go-ahead run in the 12th inning of the first game, Nathan English was stranded on second base after a one-out double. Colton Peha hit a walk-off single in the home half and Walla Walla won 6-5.

Game 2 wasn’t quite as close as the Warriors broke a 2-2 tie with two runs in the third and four runs in the sixth inning to win 8-2. Big Bend starter Parker Stohr completed five innings, but was handed the loss after allowing four runs on eight hits.

Moses Lake High School graduate Cade Tunstall pitched an inning of relief in each game of the twin bill. Tunstall did not allow a run in the first game, but was tagged for four in the second.

Big Bend rallied to take a 5-3 lead after eight innings in Game 1, highlighted by a four-run eighth inning. Cody Banks and Josh Kallstrom each hit an RBI single; Justin DeHoog had a two-run single.

However, Walla Walla forced extra innings with two runs in the bottom of the ninth. Robby Heiberg led off with a double and later scored on a single by Larry Dewitt. Jacob Haas was walked with the bases loaded to tie the game.

Heiberg burned Big Bend in the second game, starting the sixth inning rally with an RBI single. Peha added a run with a sacrifice fly and Sean Coffey scored two on a single.

Big Bend hosts Yakima Valley in a doubleheader on April 1. The first game is schedule to start at 1 p.m.

Boys soccer

Toppenish 4, Quincy 2

TOPPENISH — Quincy could not rally from a 3-0 deficit and lost to Toppenish 4-2.

The Wildcats held a 1-0 lead at halftime and opened up a 3-0 lead within the first 10 minutes of the second half.

Quincy crept back into the game after goals from Juan Borja and Danny Cruz.

Thinking there was a chance for overtime, Toppenish scored in the waning minutes of the game.

“It was a very frustrating way to end the game,” head coach Arturo Guerrero said.
