Royal boys, girls 1st at Windbreaker

ROYAL CITY — It was business as usual for the Royal High School track teams at Wahluke's Windbreaker Invitational last Friday.

The Knights won the boys competition with 129 points, and the girls took first place with 195. Quincy was a close second on the boys side with 120 points, and Kiona-Benton had 113.

The Royal girls blew the competition away, with second-place Quincy at 91 points. They were led by senior all-around performer Maggie Delay, who won three events, and junior Noelia Juarez, who won both hurdles races.

Royal won 11 of the girls events, including two relays.

Delay won the long jump with a school record 15-05.50. She took the pole vault at 8-0 and won the 100 hurdles in a school record time of 16:32.

Juarez, a long sprint specialist, took first place in the 200 with a clocking of 28.36. She doubled up in the 400 with a time of 1:03.35.

The Royal boys won their competition with depth. They won only three events but piled up the points with numerous placings.

The Knights were led by Arturo Villa's victory in the 110 hurdles and Fernando Soto's win in the 300 hurdles. The other victory came in a relay.
