EPHRATA — Moses Lake thrower Elly Johnson began her quest toward a state championship in the discus at the Ray Cross Invitational.

In her first meet of the season, Johnson threw 128-09 — longer than her mark at the 2016 state meet and good for first place on Saturday.

It was a day dominated by the Basin ladies as four other competitors joined Johnson at the top of the podium.

Moses Lake's Morgan Skone edged Ashley Sande of St. George's in the 100 meters by one one-hundredth of a second, 13-40-13.41. McCall DeChenne of Ephrata finished fist in the 300 hurdles and second in the 100 hurdles.

Royal's Maggie Delay beat out DeChenne in the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.47 seconds. Delay also added a first-place finish in the triple jump.

A state runner-up in girls basketball, Almira/Coulee-Hartline's Berlyn Hunt took first in the long jump.
