Prep roundup: Moses Lake softball wins CBBN opener

YAKIMA — Moses Lake made a statement Wednesday in Yakima.

Throw out the shaky non-league games; Moses Lake is still the team to beat in the Columbia Basin Big Nine. Gina Skinner went five strong innings and the Chiefs 10-runned West Valley 12-2.

“We kind of came out with the mental focus and attitude I've been wanting the last three games,” head coach Mike Hofheins said.

Moses Lake (1-0, 1-2) led 3-1 before scoring six runs in the fourth inning, batting around the order.

Michelle Turner led the way with a home run, single and two RBI. Tia Radach also drove in two runs and added a triple. Savannah Ashley finished 2-for-3.

From the circle, Skinner allowed five hits and struck out three.

“The girls really came to play,” Hofheins said.

QUINCY — Quincy is still trying to find the right mix for a largely new team.

The kinks were still evident in a 2-0 loss against Grandview.

“We've got to fix what we have here going on,” head coach Arturo Guerrero said.

The Jacks (0-4-1) out-shot the Greyhounds 14-12.

Ales Benitz and Alexis Correa scored one goal apiece in the second half.

The Chiefs fell in the girls' competition to the Pirates 6-1.

Ephrata splits with Grandview

GRANDVIEW — Ephrata tennis split with Grandview.

The girls won 4-1 and the boys lost 3-2.

Brianne Kliphardt paced the Tigers with a straight set victory over Alexandra Gonzalez 6-3, 6-4.

“She used great angles, a variety of strokes, and was in control of most of the points,” head coach Missy Beierman said.

Ephrata won the first four matches of the girls' competition, clinching victory after Roslyn Martin and Hannah Goodspeed won the No. 1 doubles match 6-1, 6-0.

Griffen Allen picked up a win in the No. 2 boys match 6-1, 6-2. More, Hien Duong and Allen Pham won in No. 3 doubles 6-1, 7-5.
