Columbia Basin roundup: Chiefs softball loses twice

MOSES LAKE — With some roster turnover, head coach Mike Hofheins wanted to try some new things in two non-league games.

Pitchers Savannah Ashley and Gina Skinner split time in the circle, while Sjuana Rose and Brooklyn Bailey both spent time at catcher. University took advantage of the experimentation, beating Moses Lake 10-0; Moses Lake traveled to East Wenatchee and lost to Curtis 20-4 on Saturday.

“I was fairly pleased with our approach at the plate, especially early in the game,” said Hofheins after Friday's game against the Titans. “We worked the count pretty decently, got into some deep counts, never were able to string anything together. I think part of our defense is used to having shutdown pitchers and we don't have shutdown pitchers. We have pitchers that are putting the ball in play and we've got to make plays behind them.”

Hannah Click led the Titans with four hits and three RBI.

Brooklyn Bailey, Kaylee Valdez, Gina Skinner and Michelle Turner had one hit apiece.

The Chiefs (0-2) improved all-around against the Vikings despite the score.

“Better defensive performance than the day before, but faced a hot hitting team,” Hofheins said. “Also, better offensively than U-Hi game, but not enough to keep pace.”

Bailey drove in one run and scored twice. Tia Radach and Turner also had one RBI each.

Moses Lake opens Columbia Basin Big Nine play Tuesday at West Valley.

Warden sweeps College Place

WARDEN — Warden continued its hot swinging, outscoring College Place 11-9 and 17-7 in a doubleheader.

Amanda Contreras hit two home runs in the fifth inning of Game 2, the highlight of a nine-run frame. Contreras' first blast broke a 7-7 tie.

Jocelyn Chagoya hit her second home run of the season in Game 1.

Warden (2-0, 2-1) travels to Cashmere for a non-league doubleheader on Tuesday.

Quincy routed by Selah

SELAH — Quincy softball was routed by traditional power Selah 24-0 and 23-1.

Alyssa Cousins had seven RBI for the Vikings in Game 1.

Soap Lake splits with Waterville-Mansfield

SOAP LAKE — Soap Lake split a pair of slug-fests against Waterville-Mansfield.

The Eagles dropped the opener 17-5 and won the nightcap 19-13.

Baseball

Warden swept by College Place

WARDEN — Warden was swept by College Place 20-8 and 3-1.

The Cougars walked 13 and hit four batters in the opener.

The Cougars had two runners on in the seventh inning of game two before a double play and strikeout ended the game.

Ryan Arredondo had seven strikeouts from the mound and three hits from the plate in Game 2.

Wyatt Visker was 3-for-4 in Game 1.

Ephrata sweeps Grandview

GRANDVIEW — A nine-run second inning of the first game set the tone for a doubleheader sweep by Ephrata against Grandview 18-1 and 6-3.

The Tigers led 4-0 in Game 2 before the Greyhounds closed within two runs after six innings.

Quincy swept by Ellensburg

QUINCY — Quincy could not keep pace the high-scoring Ellensburg and lost 16-3 and 23-12.

The Jacks travel to Othello March 25.

Othello wins big at Toppenish

TOPPENISH — Othello cranked up the offense, beating Toppenish 10-0 and 35-13.

Soap Lake takes two from Waterville-Mansfield

SOAP LAKE — Big bats helped Soap Lake sweep Waterville-Mansfield.

Soap Lake won the first game 14-4 and the second game 9-3.

Boys soccer

Othello 4, Wapato 0

WAPATO — Juan Tapia scored twice and Othello beat Wapato 4-0 to improve to 3-0.

Irvin Sandoval and Juan Orozco added one goal each.

After a scoreless first half, the Huskies (3-0) took advantage of the wind to score four second-half goals.

Royal 4, Granger 0

ROYAL CITY — Despite playing its fourth game in eight days, Royal had enough legs to beat Granger 4-0.

Fernando Ortiz and Michael Rojas scored in the first half for Royal; Antonio Barragan and Angel Farias scored a goal apiece in the second half.

The Knights' defense played exceptional in front of the goal as C.J. Quintero did not have to make any saves.

Eastmont 3, Quincy 1

QUINCY — Quincy boys soccer is still searching for its first win after a 3-1 loss to Eastmont.

Johan Espinoza scored two goals for the Wildcats.

Selah 2, Ephrata 1

SELAH — Ephrata was edged by Selah 2-1 on the road.

Brandon Vallejo scored the game-winner in the 57th minute.

Ephrata's Arbey Guerrero scored in the 23rd minute to tie the game.

Tennis

Part of Lewiston/Clarkston Invitational washed out

LEWISTON, Idaho — Moses Lake tennis was only able to compete on the first day of the Lewiston/Clarkston Invitational due to inclement weather. Saturday's matches were washed out by the rain.

The Chiefs totaled 40 points on Friday.

The No. 2 doubles squad of Trenton and Garrett Vance finished 3-0. Shamra Roylance and Sidney Robinson finished 2-1 in No. 1 doubles.

“It was a bummer the bracket matches were rained out,” head coach Richard Gregoire said. “The players were really looking forward to play on Saturday, especially Garrett and Trent who had a great shot a championship. This is always a favorite event for the kids on our schedule and I think they had a good time even though it was shortened this year.”

Othello tennis beats Selah

SELAH — Othello tennis won a pair on the road against Selah

The girls won the first four matches and beat Selah 4-1. In the boys' competition, the Huskies dropped the two singles matches before rallying to win all three in doubles.

Sterling Roylance and Palani Barragan dropped the first set, but rallied to beat Logan Leron and Gunner Tucker 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 in No. 3 doubles to clinch the win.

Macy Hampton bounced back from a second-set loss to beat Ashlyn Hall 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 in No. 2 singles.

Chelan sets tone at Ephrata Invitational

EPHRATA — Chelan tennis won 15 one-set matches at the Ephrata Invitational.

Ephrata girls No. 1 singles player Brianne Kliphardt finished 2-0. Kliphardt beat Caitlyn Wind of Quincy 8-2 and Madeline Peebles of Chelan 8-6.

Quincy's Natalie Thomsen and Rachel Faw won both their No. 1 doubles matches 8-2 against Ephrata and 8-3 against Chelan.

Track and field

Royal first at Windbreaker Invitational

MATTAWA — Royal boys and girls track and field won team titles at the Windbreaker Invitational in Mattawa.

In the boys' competition, the Knights edged Quincy for first place 129-120. The lady Knights won comfortably with 195 points; Quincy was second with 91.

Noelia Juarez won the 200 and 400 meters.

YAKIMA — Basin athletes had a solid performance at the Papa Wells Invitational.

Ephrata athletes Anthony Evans and Jayden Lopez were runners-up in the 200 and 400 meters, respectively.

Moses Lake girls ninth, boys 12th in Spokane

SPOKANE — Moses Lake girls track and field cracked the top 10 at the Howard Dolphin/West Valley Invitational, finishing ninth with 35 points. The boys finished 12th with 17 points.

Central Valley won the boys competition and Lakeside took the girls.

Draven Nevarez won the javelin with a mark of 138-01. The 4x400 relay of Morgan Yamane, Corina Lybbert, Carlie Gregg and Camille Carpenter finished second in a time of 4:30.92, less than half a second behind the winning team from Lakeland.

College baseball

Big Bend takes four from Centralia

MOSES LAKE — Big Bend swept a pair of weekend doubleheaders against Centralia.

Big Bend won on Saturday 6-1 and 14-6; on Sunday the Vikings won 8-2 and 5-2.

Josh Kallstrom of Ephrata homered in the series.
