Prep roundup: Alfaro, Jones lead Othello past Ellensburg
OTHELLO — Chris Alfaro and Reese Jones scored two goals each in a non-league victory against Ellensburg 5-2.
Alfaro and Jones scored in the first 10 minutes of the game, leading to a 2-0 advantage at halftime. Luis Gomez pushed the lead to 3-0 just after halftime, finishing an assist from Frankie Ramos.
The Bulldogs scored two straight goals before Alfaro and Jones answered with their second goals of the night.
More, Jones — a captain for the Huskies — talked an official out of awarding a red card to an Ellensburg player after a mid-air tackle. Instead, a yellow card was given.
“That shows our character,” head coach Bernie Garza said.
Jones, Bernie Garza Jr., Ramos, Sergio Mondragon and Gomez tallied assists.
Lewis and Clark 3, Moses Lake 1
SPOKANE — Moses Lake’s offense against Ferris did not travel to Lewis and Clark in a 3-1 loss.
The Chiefs fell behind 3-0 before a penalty kick in the second half by Daniel Sinchuk erased the shutout.
Gabe Keller scored twice for the Tigers.
Ephrata 1, Prosser 0
EPHRATA — Ephrata earned its first win of the season, holding off Prosser 1-0.
Luis Rodriguez scored the difference-maker for the Tigers in the first half.
“It was a good game for our defense,” head coach Ivan Garay said.
Royal 1, Highland 0
ROYAL CITY — Precision passing led to the lone goal in Royal’s non-league win over Highland 1-0.
Mike Rojas dished to Fernando Ortiz who found Abraham Medina for a strike in the 30th minute.
The Knights’ defense limited Highland to six total shots.
Wenatchee 4, Quincy 0
WENATCHEE — Quincy could not get anything going offensively against the reigning 4A champs and lost 4-0.
The Jacks trailed 1-0 at halftime.
Dan Reyes, Luis Navarette, Ivan Chavez and Jacob Slife scored for the Panthers.
Baseball
Ephrata 11, Cascade 0
EPHRATA — Defensive miscues went in Ephrata’s favor in an 11-0 win against Cascade.
The Tigers took advantage of errors and walks, scoring five runs in the first inning and six runs in the third inning. The Kodiaks committed four errors in the first inning.
Gunnar Falstad was 2-for-2 with two singles. Cole Spencer and Ethan Etter had two RBI each.
Tennis
Othello sweeps Ephrata
OTHELLO — Othello and Ephrata got just enough matches in to produce a result before the rain, with the Huskies winning the boys and girls competition 3-1.
For the girls, Zoee Roylance beat Brianne Kliphart in straight sets 6-2, 6-3. Ephrata evened things when Angelina Chesnakov beat Macy Hampton 6-3, 6-4.
Othello took the first two doubles matches with Tanaya Andersen and Katie Walker ousting Roslyn Martin and Taylor Perez 6-0, 6-2. Daishawn Roylance and Janae Freeman beat Mackenzie Osonell and Kayla Mullins 1-6, 6-1, 6-3.
The third doubles match was rained out for the girls and the boys.
Christian Pugh scored Ephrata’s lone win in the boys’ competition, outlasting Levi Garza 7-5, 7-5.
The Huskies bounced back to win the next three matches, starting with Asai Villarreal in No. 2 singles 2-6, 6-1, 9-7.
Collin Villarreal and Kyler Villarreal defeated Derek Wright and Clay Johns 6-3, 6-2. Sterling Roylance and Palani Barragan beat Eli Whetstone and Hien Duong 6-4, 6-1.
Moses Lake splits against Eisenhower
YAKIMA — Moses Lake boys took care of business against Eisenhower 6-1 for the team’s first league win. The Moses Lake girls were swept 7-0.
On the boys’ side, the Chiefs won the first three matches. Canon Gregoire and Trenton Vance both won in straight sets. No. 3 singles David Hernandez edged Sean Gillespie 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.
Moses Lake won all three doubles matches in straight sets.
In the No. 1 girls match, Gabby Strode took the first set from Taiz Garcia before succumbing 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
