The Royal golf girls get to kick off the SCAC East prep spring sports season Thursday with a jamboree at Othello. They will likely wear sweatshirts or sweaters, maybe even jackets.

According to Accuweather, the high temperature Thursday will be 47 degrees. With a 10 a.m. start, the girls should be into the second nine when the warmest point of the day comes.

Royal baseball also will start on Thursday with an appearance at the Ephrata jamboree. These boys, too, will have to deal with the cold.

Friday, the weather makes a favorable change, according to Accuweather. Royal boys golf is supposed to enjoy a high of 61 at Othello.

The high should drop back to about 54 on Saturday. From then on, Accuweather says, SCAC competition will experience highs in the 50s and 60s,

Saturday, Royal baseball and Royal softball will be at Goldendale. Wahluke will kick off its spring that day with a soccer contest against Seattle Christian at Kentridge.

SCAC sports action will be spotty this week. Most sports will swing into action the weekend of the 17th. Highlights will be Wahluke’s first varsity baseball game in five years and its Windbreaker Invitational Track meet.

Windbreaker is an appropriate name. The high for the track meet on Friday is not expected to exceed 53 degrees. Saturday for baseball, it is supposed to be a little colder at 52.

I envy the athletes’ opportunity to play but not the conditions They probably expend more energy warming up than during actual play.

I played baseball, and the one thing I didn’t like to do this time of year was hit the ball. The bat chattered all of the way through your body.

If it wasn’t cold, then it was windy. The wind would throw dirt in your face just about every time you made an infield play.

The worst days were when it was windy and cold.

Ah, but we got to play.
