MOSES LAKE — The kids in the 3- and 4-year-old class at Immanuel Lutheran Preschool were a little puzzled by the special guest who was coming. It’s that time of year for Read Across America, a reading promotion scheduled for the week of Dr. Seuss’s birthday.

But that was part of the puzzle to the kids. “Who’s Dr. Seuss?” asked one.

Instructor Ali Roseburg explained. “He wrote books for kids like you.” The teachers had been reading Dr. Seuss books to the kids all week, including “Cat in the Hat.” Dr. Seuss wrote that.

The kid was still puzzled. “So Dr. Seuss is a kitty?”

Once that was straightened out, the kids greeted their guest, the Cat in the Hat himself. Actually it was Louis Logan, a Kiwanis member who volunteers to play the Cat. "I've done it many times," he said.

The kids and the Cat climbed a (pretend) wall, jumped up and down, marched and danced. The kids got tickled on the nose with the Cat’s tail.

It’s the 20th anniversary of the Read Across America program, and the 35th anniversary for the preschool. As a result the preschool kids celebrated Read Across America all week, Roseburg said.

The preschool kids don’t read on their own yet, but it’s important to read to them, she said. Reading to the kids is one of the daily activities at the preschool.

The preschool meets two to three days per week, depending on the child's age.
