ROYAL CITY — Kassandra Marmolejo Mayo, Luis Gaitan Barajas, Lizbeth Alba and Marleen Martinez were selected students of the month at Royal High School for December and January.

Royal High counselor Jennifer McCoy said the months were combined due to a high number of school days missed because of extreme winter weather.

McCoy selects the nominees based on several personal characteristics, such as academics, citizenship and leadership. The teaching staff votes on those nominations.

Ninth grade student of the month is Kassandra Marmolejo, daughter of Arnulfo and Alondra Marmolejo. She was nominated for “outstanding attitude, work ethic and exceptional work.”

Marmolejo is a fan of “Teen Wolf” on television and the movie “Treat You Better.” She enjoys drawing and loves to eat enchiladas.

Marmolejo’s favorite quote is “stay positive, work hard and make it happen.”

She is inspired by her mother “because she works hard to take care of me and my sisters and does anything to make sure we’re all right.”

The sophomore SOM is Luis Gaitan Barajas, son of Manuel and Angelica Gaitan. McCoy nominated him for being “positive, hard working, open to questions and search for answers.”

Luis’s favorite food is tacos from Taquería Gaitan. He likes playing soccer, listening to music and spending time with friends.

Gaitan’s advice to other students is “to do their work and pay attention in class.”

Lizbeth, the junior SOM, is the daughter of Rocio Andersen. She was nominated for “dependable, cares about education and shown growth as a person.

Her favorite TV show is “Avatar: The Last Airbender.” Her favorite song is “My Girl” by The Temptations. She likes to paint, and spaghetti is her favorite meal.

Lizbeth’s favorite quote is, “my people skills are rusty.” And she advises others not to procrastinate.

Senior SOM Marleen is the daughter of Manuel and Magdalena Martinez. She was nominated for being “a leader in many ways, a good role model for others.

Marleen is a fan of the movie “The Fault in Our Stars.” She enjoys Mexican cuisine and hanging out/going out with her friends.

Her favorite quote is “If you are not willing to learn, no one can help you. If you are determined to learn, no one can stop you.”
