Columbia Basin roundup: ACH girls win opening-round game against Yakama Nation Tribal
SPOKANE — Almira/Coulee-Hartline did not let sickness or an early tip-off stand in the way of a fast start in its first-round game at the 1B Hardwood Classic.
Despite a few players getting sick before Wednesday’s game, ACH head coach Mike Correia was able to rely on his normal rotation to start both halves, which was the difference. Almira/Coulee-Hartline outscored Yakama Nation Tribal by 18 points in the first and third quarter combined to win 59-36.
“We were able to jump off in that first quarter in a normal routine,” Correia said.
The second and fourth quarters were largely even, with the Warriors bench receiving extended minutes and some girls playing out of position.
“Other girls had to step up,” Correia said.
Gabi Isaak was one of the players battling the bug. Isaak totaled 11 rebounds in limited minutes. Berlyn Hunt and Tiffany Boutain led the offense with 18 and 15 points, respectively. Caitlin O’Neil had a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds.
“I was happy with our effort,” Correia said.
ACH is in the early bird special again today, playing undefeated Tacoma Baptist at 9 a.m.
The Crusaders are 24-0 and are led by 6-foot center Rachel VanLiew.
Tacoma Baptist defeated Cedar Park Christian in the regional round 49-28.
“We’re going to have to come out and play pretty well to stay with them,” Correia said.
