MLHS honors perfect attendance, students of the year
MOSES LAKE — Keelie Waters knew exactly what she wanted to do with her time once the school year ends.
“Sleep in,” she told Moses Lake High School principal Mark Harris as he handed her a certificate for perfect attendance.
Waters wasn’t alone in her desire to stay in bed well past the rising of the sun, though most of the other 11 Moses Lake High School students who received the same award at a short ceremony on Wednesday said they wanted to play sports — baseball or soccer — or travel.
“These are the kids that have perfect attendance,” said Harris. “As high school students, that’s pretty amazing when you consider all the things these kids have going on in their lives.”
Harris spoke during a short ceremony Wednesday morning to honor both students of the year and those students who had managed to be at school every day unless they were gone for a school function or had a medical appointment.
Harris also honored as students of the year those who “are getting their work done, paying attention, asking difficult questions, and supporting other students” and who have been noticed doing all these things by many different staff members multiple times in different disciplines.
“Kids who are doing all the right things don’t realize that the adults around them notice they are doing all the right things,” Harris said.
Moses Lake High School honored as students of the year: freshmen Savannah Ashley, Jason Gollihar, Abram Ramirez, Andrew Saldana, Logan Sperline, and Alissa Whitaker; sophomores Macy Adkinson, Carl Hart, Briana Martin Villa, Diana Nguyen, and Daniella Valdivia-Arredondo; and juniors Obiomachi Abonyi and Kyler Haneberg.
Students were asked what they want to do with their lives. While a few weren’t sure, the answers were as varied as Gollihar’s announcement that he wants to be an author to several who wanted to be physicians.
“I’m not sure what I want to do but I know I will serve God whatever it is,” Abonyi said.
