Basin roundup: Spuds dealt first loss by Pepsi-Pak
SPOKANE — Central Washington was unable to get over the hump against league foe Yakima Pepsi-Pak in the third round of the state tournament.
The Pepsi-Pak exploded for 13 runs in the fourth inning and won 17-3 in seven innings. Prior to that lengthy half inning, Central Washington had tied the game 2-2 after one run apiece in the second and third inning.
Brandon Swett scored on a passed ball and Cody Goodwin hit a RBI single.
Cameron Duke was 3-for-4 with two doubles and one run scored.
Central Washington plays the Mavericks in a loser-out contest today at 3 p.m.
South Oregon 7, River Dogs 6
KELSO — The River Dogs were able to score three runs in the seventh inning to tie the game, but fell in extras 7-6 to South Oregon in their first game of the 13- 15-year-old Babe Ruth Regional Tournament.
South Oregon executed a squeeze bunt in the bottom of the eighth inning to score the winning run.
South Oregon led 5-0 after two innings.
The River Dogs got three runs back in the third inning. Davis Spencer hit a three-run double, but was thrown out trying to stretch his hit into a triple to end the inning.
South Oregon added a run in the sixth inning.
Down to their last at-bat, the River Dogs plated three runs in the seventh inning to tie the game 6-6. Spencer hit a sacrifice fly and two more runs scored when South Oregon committed an error.
Sedro-Woolley 14, Moses Lake 0
CALGARY, Alberta — Moses Lake managed just one hit and lost its 14-year-old Babe Ruth Regional Tournament opener to Sedro-Woolley 14-0.
Sedro-Woolley scored two runs in the first inning and enacted the 10-run rule after scoring five runs in the sixth inning.
Kamden Kuykendall was 1-for-3 for the Dirt Brothers.

Aaron Whalen medals at amateur tournament
PULLMAN — Former Ephrata High School standout Aaron Whalen won medalist honors at the U.S. Amateur qualifying at Palouse Ridge Golf Club.
Whalen, a former Class 2A state champion, shot rounds of 64-68.
Whalen will go on to compete in the 2017 U.S. Amateur Championship on Aug. 14-20 at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
