Peters sets Desert Aires GC course record in tournament win

MATTAWA — Ephrata senior Kenedee Peters checked one more thing off the bucket list last week at the WJGA District 4 Sub-District No. 3 tournament at Desert Aire Golf Course.

Peters added another course record to the growing list, winning the tournament with a 2-under-par 70. The two-time 2A state medalist lit up the Mattawa course with a dazzling display of golf to win by three strokes over A.C. Davis standout Cassie Kim, the Columbia Basin Big Nine Player of the Year last spring, 73, and East Valley’s Morgan Baum, who carded 74.

For Peters, who was 20th at the U.S. Women’s Open and ninth at the IMG Junior World Championships qualifiers earlier this summer, it was her third women’s course record.

Peters blistered Gamble Sands Golf Course with a 6-under-par 66 during the 2A regular golf season and won a district championship with a 2-under-par 69 on her home course at Lakeview Golf & Country Club in Soap Lake. Now, she owns the best women’s score at Desert Aire Golf Course with a 2-under-par 70.

Peters finished each side of the WJGA District 4 Sub-District No. 3 tournament with bogey or she could have gone even lower. All three on the top of the leaderboard opened with a first-hole bogey and all three got it back with birdie on the par-4 third hole.

Peters and Baum moved to 1-under-par with matching birdies at No. 6. Baum, who defeated Peters by one stroke for the 2A state medalist honor in 2016, made the turn at minus-1, leading by a stroke.

Peters, who has given a verbal commitment to Washington State, took the lead with an eagle on the par-4. 11th hole and capped her three-stroke victory with one more birdie on No. 16 to win running away.
