An early evening fire Wednesday destroyed the home of Othello mayor Shawn Logan. Othello Police, EMS and Adams County Fire District #5 personnel arrived on the scene to find the house engulfed in flames.

“When I arrived the roof was fully involved,” Assistant Fire Chief Tom Salsbury said. “The fire did severe damage to the house is  – its unlivable.”

The Logan's were not at home when the fire broke out. Next door neighbor Dan Lynch was the first to notice smoke coming from the structure and told his wife to call it in.

“I was inside my house – my wife had gone out back to dump the garbage. She didn't notice anything at first, but when I looked out the window, I saw smoke billowing out of the roof,” Lynch said. “When I opened my garage door there was so much smoke I couldn't see Shawn's house. I then went back inside my house and told my wife to call 911.”

Lynch said several kids across the street at the skatepark at Lions Park came running to the scene to inquire if anyone was inside the house.

“Those boys deserve some sort of medal,” Lynch said. “They knocked on the door, and then kicked it in. Fortunately no one was at home … the Logan's were at the movies.”

The house was completely destroyed. There are homes in close proximity on both sides of structure. The fire was so hot it melted the siding on the East outside wall of Lynch's garage. There was no apparent damage to the house on the other side of the Logan's. Mayor Logan has been unavailable for comment. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
