EPHRATA — Six students participated in the local section of Poetry Out Loud on Jan. 19 at Ephrata High School. This is a national competition that starts at a school level in January. The national competition offers a large scholarship and other prizes for students who win. This poetry recitation competition asks students to analyze a poem, memorize it, and then perform it with the appropriate level of emotion. The three judges who helped select winners were Aaron Loeffelbein, Sharon Scellick, and Kathleen Alstott. Two students were selected of the six to represent Ephrata High School at regionals taking place at Yakima Valley Community College Feb. 5.

First place went to junior Maya Allsopp, second place was taken by sophomore Chenoa Bedford and runner-up was freshman Emily Allsopp. Freshman Lilly McMullen, sophomore Emilee Brooks and junior Avery Mickelsen also competed. Coordinators were Samantha Byam and Marla Allsopp.
