ROYAL CITY — Sophomore Owen Ellis scored a career high 32 points for the Royal High basketball team, but there was not support to overcome Kiona-Benton in SCAC East action last Friday night.

Even a 29-point fourth period couldn’t do the job as Ki-Be won, 71-68. Saturday Royal ran into what may be one of the best class 1A teams in the state, falling to Warden, 81-48.

Ellis scored 10 points in that wild 29-22 final frame against Ki-Be, and he contributed in every quarter, starting with seven points in the second period and six in the third.

Junior Isaac Ellis was the second-leading scorer with 13 points. He scored seven in the final frame. Others to score were Sawyer Jenks 7, Jaimen Smith 6, Gage Christensen 3, Juan Ojeda 2, Corbin Christensen 2, Osiel Ramirez 2 and Carter Dorsing 1.

Usually the team’s leading scorer, Corbin Christensen missed half of this game because of fouls. The team was called for 26.

“We started playing good defense too late,” coach Pete Christensen said.

Warden was just flat good. The Cougars are 10-3 overall and 6-1 in the SCAC. They were a model of consistency Saturday, scoring 20, 20, 20 and 21 points by quarter. Two Warden players combined for 52 points.

Corbin Christensen, who did not commit a foul, led the Knights with 17 points. Owen Ellis had 15, and Isaac Ellis contributed 11. The rest of the scoring as Gage Christensen 2, Osiel Ramirez 2 and Raynor Beierle 1.

“Tired defensive play,” coach Christensen said. “It seems to be wearing on the boys.”

Royal hosted College Place last night, too late for Sun Tribune press time. The Knights will travel to River View on Friday and host Burbank on Saturday.
