Royal wrestlers second at Castle Rock tourney
ROYAL CITY — Royal High School put on a good show at the Castle Rock Tournament Saturday, taking second place in the nine-team field.
Two days earlier split duals at Granger, beating Goldendale, 46-22, and falling to powerful Granger, 57-10.
Royal took 16 wrestlers to Castle Rock. Castle Rock won the title with 254 points, just edging Royal, which scored 252. Third place Mt. Baker was way back at 134 points.
Royal got seven boys into the finals, taking five championships. Rodolfo Flores took the title at 106 pounds, Eduardo Rodriguez did the same at 120, as did Abraham Medina at 126, Victor Santillan at 132 and C.J. Quintero at 182.
Rodriguez won his final against Kaleb Carroll of Castle Rock, a returning state placer, 8-6. Medina won his final with a pin. Santillan also scored a pin.
Santillan had a perfect day. He pinned all three of his opponents, and neither of his matches went past the second round.
Kevin Pastor finished second at 138 pounds, upsetting the No. 1 seed in the semifinals, Jesus Torero from Mt. Baker. He fell 8-4 in the finals to Andrew Jones of Castle Rock.
Jose Galindo also took second place at 160 pounds.
Taking third for the Knights was Addin Felker at 145 pounds, Regan Callahan at 152 pounds, Jack Diaz at 170 pounds, and Jose Jimenez at 195 pounds.
Taking fourth for the Knights was Jacob Joslin 170, Ryder Eilers 220, and Daniel Bonilla finished sixth at 152 pounds.
“Fourteen of the 16 wrestlers we took placed in the top 6,” Coach Pat Mitchell. “It was a great step for our kids, who rallied late in the tournament to come within one match of winning the tournament as a team.”
“I was so proud of our guys fight and determination all day,” Mitchell added. “It was a great experience for our kids who got to see competition that they don’t normally get exposed to.”
Castle Rock was a great host, housing our wrestlers and cheerleaders in their homes. Royal does the same for Castle Rock wrestlers at Royal’s Christmas Tournament.
“It’s a great tradition between the two schools,” Mitchell said.
There really wasn’t much competition from Goldendale in the dual at Granger. Most of the points for either team were scored by forfeits.
Addin Felker won a major decision, 16-8, against Bryan Waddell of Goldendale. Jack Diaz, and Abraham Medina had pins for Royal.
Royal’s only wins against Granger came from Eduardo Rodriguez with a pin and Victor Santillan with a major decision. But the best match of the night came at 132. Royal’s Abraham Medina wrestled up a weight and lost a 4-3 decision to Juan Isidoria who placed fifth at state last year.
