Othello boys fall to Prosser, Ellensburg in CWAC hoops
OTHELLO — The Othello Huskies dropped two more CWAC basketball contests last weekend by wide margins, but they played well much, if not most of the time.
The Huskies fell back by 15 points after one quarter against Prosser, but they battled hard the rest of the way in a 62-44 outcome.
In another 18-point loss Saturday, 71-53, to Ellensburg, the Huskies played tough first and third quarters. They led, 15-13 after one period.
“We got within four points in the third quarter,” coach George Juarez said. “Unfortunately, they hit three quick shots to go back up by 10.”
Juarez noted team shooting has fallen off after Christma, and he is surprised by that. The team lost several games before Christmas, but most of them were close, including some overtime affairs.
“We’ll work on our shooting this week,” he said.
Juarez has not given up on the rest of the season. There is time to work out some problems and finish the season on the upswing.
“I’m really looking forward to next year,” the second-year coach and former superintendent said. “We’ll be more senior-laden.” The Huskies had nine players score against Prosser. The not-so-good news was that only one scored in double figures.
Michael Gutierrez led the way with 13 points, which included a 4-4 effort at the free throw line. Trenton Gutforth and Jonathan Garza backed him with six points each.
Kyler Villarreal and Elias Valdez scored five points. Diego Buenrostro had four points, Sam Azevedo and Brayan Garza two each and Trevor Hilmes one.
Gutierrez fell off to seven points against Ellensburg, but Villarreal and Jonathan Garza picked up the slack with 17 and 11 points each.
Others to score for the Huskies were Hilmes with seven points, Adrian Garza with five, Valdez with four and Gutforth with two.
If the (1-9 CWAC) Huskies are going to rally, a good time to start will be this Saturday at 2-8 East Valley. Friday will be tough at 7-3 Wapato.
