Sports roundup: Moses Lake wrestling second at Matman Classic

PORT ORCHARD — Moses Lake captured three individual championships and finished second in the team race at the Matman Classic.

The Chiefs were bested by Curtis in the team standings 215.5-145.5.

South Kitsap, Mt. Spokane and Lake Stevens rounded out the top five.

Hunter Cruz (152), Payton Castro (195) and Chandler Fluaitt (285) won tournament championships. Cruz defeated South Kitsap's Davonn Keyes 5-1, Castro edged Curtis' Luke Purcella 8-4 and Fluaitt outlasted Curtis' Calhoun Helmberger 5-2.

Nick Hara (132) and Daiman Vasquez (182) were runners-up. Hara lost to North Central's Clai Quintanilla 5-0 and Vasquez was pinned by Lake Stevens' Malachi Lawrence in the first round.

Daniel Zermeno (285) finished fourth.

Moses Lake hosts Eastmont for senior night Jan. 19.


Ephrata wins Bronze Championship at River City Duals

POST FALLS, Idaho — Ephrata struggled in pod play, but bounced back to finish first in the bronze bracket.

Ephrata lost to Post Falls 63-24 and Medical Lake 42-40 in Pod B play.

The Tigers rallied to beat Timberlake 57-30, Lewis and Clark 40-34 and Post Falls 2 on criteria 42-42 to claim first in the bronze championship.

Ephrata travels for a CWAC dual at Selah on Tuesday.


Othello fifth at Ray Westerberg Invitational

ELLENSBURG — Othello had eight placers and finished fifth at the Ray Westerberg Invitational.

The Huskies tallied 145 points; W.F. West won the team title with 182.5 points.

Jaxon Rocha (113), Collin Freeman (152) and TJ Martinez (195) and Isaiah Perez (220) all took third; Chris Melo (106) was fourth; Jeremy Mendez (120), Reese Jones (170) and Chemi Cantu (285) were fifth.


Boys basketball

Ephrata wins a pair, climbs to second in CWAC

Ephrata ended Toppenish's six-game win streak 78-71 and stifled Wapato 64-52 for two wins, moving to 8-3 in the CWAC and a tie for second.

Cameron Clark and Jakob Oxos scored 18 and 17 points, respectively, against the Wildcats.

Clark continued his hot shooting against the Wolves, pouring in 22 points. Defensively, Ephrata held Wapato to 14 points below its season average.

The Tigers have won six in a row and are now up to No. 10 in the RPI rankings.


Quincy drops games to Prosser, Ellensburg

Quincy couldn't contain Scott Blakney in a 76-36 loss to Prosser.

Blakney led the Mustangs with 26 points.

Trajan Trevino scored a team-high 12 for the Jacks.

On Saturday, Trevino scored 23 points in a 78-65 loss to Ellensburg. Bryce Helgeson out-dueled Trevino with 24 points.


Othello loses twice on the road

Othello had no answer for Hunter Jacob and lost to Wapato 59-44.

Jacob scored 30 points for the Wolves. Kyler Villarreal paced the Huskies with 10 points.

Trenton Cutforth scored 15 points, by Othello lost to East Valley 71-62.


Warden wins a pair of blowouts

Warden won big over College Place 67-46 and Royal 81-48.

Adam Richins led the Cougars with 29 points against the Knights. JR Delgado and Tanner Skone added 23 and 10 points, respectively.

Delgado led the way against College Place with 25 points.


Girls basketball

Ephrata splits with Toppenish, Wapato

Ephrata dispatched Toppenish 66-50 and narrowly upset undefeated Wapato 43-41.

Against Wapato, Katelyn Ostrowski and Madison Martin combined for 31 points. Martin also led the Tigers with 16 points against the Wildcats; Kenedee Peters added 12.


Quincy bested by Prosser, Ellensburg

Quincy struggled defensively and lost to Prosser 66-13 and Ellensburg 60-28.

Rachel Faw scored three points against the Mustangs; Hailey McKee had a team-high 15 against the Bulldogs.


Othello struggles on the road

Othello lost a pair of road games against Wapato 64-25 and East Valley 59-29.

Macy Hampton led the Huskies with both games with 12 points against the Wolves and 18 points against the Red Devils.


Warden beats College Place, Royal

Bailey Whitney scored 23 points in wins over College Place (49-44) and Royal (65-41).

Junior Cassidy Turner emerged as a No. 2 option with 17 points against Royal.


Men's college basketball

Walla Walla 112, Big Bend 103

WALLA WALLA — Big Bend lost a shootout against fifth-ranked Walla Walla 112-103.

The Runnin' Vikes trailed by one point at halftime, but were outscored 57-49 in the second half.

Jacob McCord had 43 points and 15 rebounds for Big Bend. McCord was matched by Walla Walla's Caulin Bakalarski who had 34 and Gabe Porter who had 29.


Women's college basketball

Walla Walla 78, Big Bend 55

WALLA WALLA — Former Touchet standout Cierra Jo McKeown exploded for 29 points to lead Walla Walla over Big Bend 78-55.

The Warriors pulled away with a 30-point third quarter.

Sunnie Martinez had 13 points for the Vikings.
