Tiger girls off and running in CWAC with win over Quincy

QUINCY — The Ephrata girls outscored Quincy 23-2 in the second quarter to set the tone in Friday night’s Central Washington Athletic Conference basketball game and stayed focused throughout their 58-27 victory to open the second half of the season.
Mya Buchert led the Tigers (7-4, 5-4 CWAC) with 12 points. Kenedee Peters and Madison Martin added 11 points apiece for Ephrata, which led 51-17 going into the final eight minutes.
Rachel Faw was the Jacks’ (2-9, 0-9 CWAC) leading scorer with nine points and Alysha Donovan finished up with seven.
“I thought we played with better intensity than we have been playing with,” Ephrata wing Maggie Buchert said. “We found the open players and cutters tonight and didn’t just throw it up. Personally, I feel more comfortable playing defense and I’ve been focusing on being more aggressive. I need to get more confidence shooting the ball.”
Quincy is playing hard, head coach Cory Medina said, but they need to find some confidence on the offensive end. The Jacks did score 21 second-half points.
“We only took 14 first-half shots,” he said. “I told them that’s not going cut it, and I thought we shot the ball a little better in the second half.”
The Jacks scored 11 points in the third quarter, helped along by 3-point baskets by Hailey McKee and Faw.
As for the CWAC, they’re all chasing unbeaten Wapato (9-0, 9-0 CWAC). The Tigers are currently in fourth place, a game back of East Valley (Yakima) for third place. They can’t make them all up at once, but the Tigers settled into a nice little running game in the first half before giving the reserves some second-half playing time.
“We put some things in during the break, so this was a good opportunity to work on what the defense is supposed to be doing and communicating,” Tiger coach Aaron Ross said. “That was our focus tonight. We ran a little man, trap and press. It was a straight man full press at times. We tried to switch it out. We have some big games coming up, so this was a chance to work on some things we’re going to need down the road.”

QUINCY — Rachel Faw scored 13 points, but Quincy fell to Selah 62-26.
The Jacks trailed 23-9 after the first quarter.
Kylie Wilkey and Adriel Willis scored 16 points each for the Vikings.
Quincy travels to Prosser Jan. 13 before a home game against Ellensburg on Jan. 14
