Kudos to state wrestlers
With so many local athletes competing in the state wrestling tournament this week at the Tacoma Dome, we want to acknowledge all the hard work and dedication involved. Grapplers from Quincy, Moses Lake, Warden, Royal City, Othello, and Ephrata will be heading across the mountains for their shot at glory against the best in the state.
Competing against one’s peers and juggling school, family and other responsibilities aren’t an easy task. They’re doable for many student athletes, but not easy. Anything worthwhile usually isn’t. There’s a lot of blood, sweat and tears that go into athletics.
Setting goals, attaining them, and setting new goals is all part of the experience. Success, failure, and making comebacks are too.
Student athletes who stick with a sport and give it their all should be commended. Learning teamwork, cooperation, and grace under pressure are skills athletes will use for a lifetime. Being part of a team is a great experience that translates well for a student once he or she enters the working world. We all know one must be able to function as a team at work, cheerfully take orders from a supervisor, and patiently work with a customer or colleague who may or may not be your biggest fan.
Taking direction, accepting constructive criticism, and performing in public are valuable too. Not to mention gaining time management and leadership skills.
Parents, family members, coaches and teachers who support student athletes should be commended as well. Making sure athletes have all they need at home and school to succeed is a big task. We appreciate the many people it takes to create and sustain a competitive athlete. And of course, good luck to all state wrestlers. This is your chance to shine.
