School growth can't wait

| February 9, 2017 2:00 AM

I, like most, take no pleasure any time property taxes increase. I need to be convinced of the necessity. The 2017 Moses Lake School District’s construction bond proposal is a challenge we’re forced to confront as the result of a growing community. 0ur student enrollment has outgrown its school facilities. Currently our high school’s enrollment is the second-largest in the state with over 2,400 students, in a facility intended to accommodate 1,600. Projections from elementary enrollments indicate continued growth of class sizes. This is not a new dilemma.

Our dedicated school board, staff, as well as community volunteers, have been studying and researching solutions for a number of years. They’ve asked and received input from the public as well as professional consultants. I’m not sure any issue in our community has been studied and debated more. I know if we do nothing and vote down this proposal, the issue could have severe consequences to our community and future economic growth. My four adult children reaped the benefits of a quality education received in the Moses Lake School District. I want to ensure other young people in our community have the same opportunity. I believe the proposed construction bond is a viable solution, and intend to vote for it. If you’re on the fence and not convinced, I encourage you to visit MLHS or one of our middle schools. This is a decision and investment we can’t afford to delay or postpone.
