Reality check on new high school

In Sunday’s paper, the Moses Lake School Board members disagreed about what to do with the bond. Hey, folks, the solution is easy: The voters approved the school bond. Follow the voters’ will – work together to get the new high school built. Period.

One member suggested a reality check. Well, here’s the only reality that counts: Moses Lake High School is crowded. It was built for 1,600 students, and today it houses up to 2,200 (not counting the 159 Running Start students). We have noticed the crowded conditions, and Duane saw it first-hand when he subbed there.

Here’s another reality check: The high school is too small now and will be too small next year and will continue to be too small at least through 2029 when today’s kindergarten enters the high school. Stalling or kicking the can down the road also increases future building costs for elementary and junior high schools.

Here’s another reality check: About 100 new students a year enter the school district. Moses Lake is booming – look at all the apartment construction. Families moving in equals more students in the classrooms. Putting them into sardine-can schools does not foster the quality education we all expect for our children and grandchildren.

The school board members need to set aside their differences in opinions and agendas and support the voter-approved school bond. It is that simple.
