Basin roundup: Hunter Cruz captures Tri-State title, Moses Lake third overall
COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — Hunter Cruz won all but one match by fall en route to the 160-pound championship at the Tri-State Tournament.
Cruz was Moses Lake’s only champion, but two Chiefs were runners-up.
Payton Castro (220) avenged a loss to Central Valley’s John Keiser last week at the Inland Empire Classic with a 1-0 win in the Tri-State semifinals. Castro was pinned in the championship final by Tahoma’s Kione Gill. Gill is ranked No. 1 in Class 4A.
Maximus Zamora upset Inland Empire Classic champion Alex Edelblute of Lakeland in the 106-pound semifinals with a third-round pin. Zamora ran into top-ranked Jacob Bennett of Lake Stevens in the finals and was pinned near the end of the first round.
Out of 68 teams, Moses Lake finished third overall with 156 points — the highest finish of Washington high schools. Class 5A Post Falls totaled 220 to win the team title. Montana’s Flathead scored 173.5 points and took second.
Othello scored 84 points and finished 19th as a team. Chris Melo (106) was fifth and Isaiah Perez (285) was sixth. Perez was pinned in the championship semifinal by eventual champion Josh Alvarez of Chiawana. Melo lost to Zamora in the second round 13-7.

Ephrata third at Cadet Classic
YAKIMA — Ephrata had two champions and finished fourth overall with 119.5 points at the Cadet Classic.
Sammy Flores (106) pinned Selah’s Andy Pimentel and Clay Johns beat Wapato’s Uriel Garcia 9-2.
Mac Laird reached the 195-pound finals, but ran into Hunter Gangle of Naches Valley. Gangle pinned his way to the championship.
Kelvin Sager (106) and Kevin Pelayo (220) finished fifth and heavyweight Efrain Bedolla took third.
Sunnyside won the tournament comfortably, totaling 246.5 points.

Othello runs away with Lady Grizzly Invite
NEWPORT — Othello blew away the competition at the 17-team Lady Grizzly Invite, winning the tournament by almost 200 points.
Othello racked up 275 points for first place. Quincy was a distant second with 95 points.
Othello had six champions.
Bernice Mendoza (100) pinned Quincy’s Jacqueline Torres, Gabriela Rodriguez (105) pinned Quincy’s Xochitl Tafoya and Emily Mendez won the 110-pound championship to lead the Huskies in the lightweights.
Jacky Peguero (120), Ruby Villalobos (130) and Elizabeth Giles (140) were also tournament champions.
Quincy’s Cynthia Diaz was the 115-pound runner-up, Joseline Gonzalez (120) was fourth, Samantha Schaapman (195) was third and Cassandra Ruiz (235) was third.
Other Husky placers included: Carmelita Garcia (third), Mercedes Gonzalez (fourth), Rose Gutierrez (third), Angela Rosas Hernandez (fourth), Esmeralda Mendoza (third), Selene Velazquez (fourth), Victoria Mendoza (second) and Estephania Vargas (second).
Boys basketball
Sunnyside 65, Moses Lake 58
MOSES LAKE — Moses Lake could not overcome a 22-point deficit and lost to Sunnyside 65-58.
Zach Phillips scored a team-high 23 points. Evan McLean added 13 points.
The Chiefs put together a 16-0 run in the fourth quarter to cut their deficit to six points.
Columbia 58, Warden 34
BURBANK — Warden lost its SCAC East opener on the road to Columbia 58-34.
Dreyton Martinez scored 15 points for the Cougars.
Royal 54, River View 41
KENNEWICK — Corbin Christensen scored a game-high 20 points and Royal beat River View 54-41.
After a delayed start due to another state championship run by the football team, Royal basketball is 2-0.
Wahluke 65, Kiona-Benton 60
BENTON CITY — Sergio Pineda scored 20 points and Wahluke outlasted Kiona-Benton 65-60.
The Bears received 24 points each from Saul Quinones and Ricky Cabrera.
Colfax 46, Lind-Ritzville/Sprague 29
RITZVILLE — Lind-Ritzville/Sprague did not score in double figures in any quarter and lost to Colfax 46-29.
Camden Smith scored a team-high 11 points.
Almira/Coulee-Hartline 82, Valley Christian 37
COULEE CITY — Maguire Isaak scored 19 points and Almira/Coulee-Hartline routed Valley Christian 82-37.
The Warriors led 48-21 at halftime.

GRANDVIEW — Macy Hampton scored over half of Othello’s points in a 75-43 loss to Grandview.
Hampton scored a game-high 22 points.

BENTON CITY — Kaylynn Holiday poured in 16 points in Wahluke’s road win over Kiona-Benton 48-32.
Wahluke held Kiona-Benton to less than 25 points through three quarters.

RITZVILLE — Lind-Ritzville/Sprague trailed Colfax 37-13 at halftime and lost 71-34.

Big Bend routed host Tacoma 102-74. Blake Dittman scored 33 points and Mauricio Smith added 20.
Big Bend edged Umpqua in its tournament finale 86-79.

Big Bend 69, Portland 48
MOSES LAKE — Miranda Johnson scored 21 points off the bench and Big Bend beat Portland 69-48.
Callie Gronning led the starting unit with 14 points and nine rebounds.
