Cle Elum — Sergio Pineda, Ricky Cabrera and Abraham Olivares combined for 49 points and the Warriors blew past Cle Elum 78-52 on the road Friday to move to 4-0 in nonleague action.

“Good communication on defense and moving the ball well on offense to create open shots were the keys to the win,” coach Clayton Buck said. “We open league play at home against Connell. They are very well coached, a very disciplined team, and bring their best every game. We plan to stick to our plan of moving the ball on offense to create open space for good shots, and communicating well on defense.”

Tipoff for the game with the Eagles is 7:30 p.m.

Girls

Cle Elum jumped out to an 11-6 first quarter lead. The Lady Warriors fought back to tie it 20-all at the half. The home team then outscored Wahluke 17-6 in the third quarter to go up top 37-26. Cle Elum hung 16 on the board in the fourth quarter to run away with it. The team falls to 2-1 in nonleague play with the loss.

“I thought we competed really well the first half — actually led by five mid-way through the second quarter,” coach Brock Anderson said. “They came out pretty inspired in the third quarter — basically hit us with an 11-0 punch and we didn’t respond with the same kind of energy. Cle Elum doesn’t have a lot of weaknesses — their defense was pretty stifling in the second half — we couldn’t get it inside, and had a hard time getting anything going offensively.”

Jacky Hidalgo led Wahluke with 10 points. Jacky Barajas pulled down eight rebounds. The team committed 24 turnovers, which basically took them out of contention.

Wahluke opens league play against Connell on the Warriors home court Dec. 15. Game time is 6 p.m.
