'The Wizard of Oz' hits the stage on Friday

MOSES LAKE — Dance FX dance studio will travel down the yellow brick road in “The Wizard of Oz” this Friday. The dance company will perform this beloved classic at the Moses Lake High School Theater at 6:30 p.m.

“I wanted to do something different this year” said Toby Black, owner and choreographer of the studio. “I didn’t want to dance to Jingle Bells again this year, but wanted a show that has a Christmas theme, ‘there’s no place like home.’” Home is one of the central themes of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

As Dorothy is displaced by the tornado, and taken from her home of Kansas she is dropped into a brilliant creation full of color and beauty. Even though, Dorothy finds friends in Oz, home still represents security, ease, and acquaintance. “All things we find at home during the Christmas season,” Black commented.

Friendship is also highlighted.

“Who doesn’t need a friend, especially during the holidays? I love that friendship is another significant idea in the show,” Black said. Dorothy finds the brainless Scarecrow, the heartless Tin Woodman, and the Cowardly Lion as friends along her way, not realizing they have each other. Together, the friends defeat the Wicked Witch of the West and accomplished their journey to Oz, becoming better people in the process.

The studio has been working on the show since October and the students are excited to finally perform their dances.

“This movie is scary,” says Kali, who plays a rainbow and a crow. “I hope our show will not be that scary.”

With familiar songs and lots of fun dancing, the show will have you humming a song on the way out.
