MOSES LAKE — Zach Washburn has made quite the impression in his first two high school meets.

The Moses Lake freshman made a state qualifying time in the 50 freestyle at the Columbia Basin Big Nine pentathlon meet. Thursday, during the first dual meet of the season against Walla Walla, Washburn qualified for the state meet in the 200 individual medley (1:59.53) and broke the school record in the 100 backstroke with a time of 54.46 seconds. The previous record-holder was Mike Maier.

“Zach is a gifted swimmer that has great work ethic in practice plus he’s a really good student,” head coach Tony St. Onge said. “That sky is the limit... He has a natural feel for the water.”

Moses Lake trounced Walla Walla in team points, 134-46.

More, Ander Molitor placed first in the 100 and 50 freestyle, qualifying for state in the former with a time of 48.7 seconds.

Moses Lake also qualified the 200 medley relay (1:38.51) and 400 freestyle relay (3:17.27) for the state meet. Moses Lake is ranked first in the state in all three relays.
