OTHELLO — Landowners in District 4 of the East Columbia Irrigation District will vote Dec. 12 on a representative to the district’s board of directors. The winner will be elected to a three-year term, beginning January 2018.

Russ Fox and Duaine Anderson are the candidates. Voters may cast ballots in person at the irrigation district office, 55 North Eighth Ave., Othello, or by absentee ballot. The office will be open for balloting from 1 to 8 p.m. Dec. 12.

Absentee ballots must be postmarked no later than midnight Dec. 13, or can be returned to the district office before 8 p.m. Dec. 12. Absentee ballots can be obtained at the district office, by calling the office, 509-488-9671, or from the candidates.

To qualify to vote, individuals must own land within the director district and be Washington residents. Individuals can vote only within the director district where they live or in the district closest to their residence.

Owners of less than 10 acres receive one vote, while landowners with more than 10 acres are allowed two votes. Husbands and wives owning land as community property can both vote, or one can delegate the vote to the other, but in that case landowners must fill out the appropriate forms. “Voting for land held by corporations or other legal entities such as trusts or LLCs can be done by delegating the voting rights to a designated representative of the entity,” according to a press release from the irrigation district.

Director Division 4 is completely within Adams County. It’s bound on the north by the Grant-Adams County line, on the south by the Franklin-Adams County Line, on the west by the irrigation district boundary and on the east by Cunningham and Fox roads.
