Ribbon cutting ceremony at Royal Dairy scheduled

ROYAL CITY — A new 81,000 square-foot surface area wastewater facility at Royal Dairy is going online Aug. 22.
The waster water treatment facility, Mai-Anne Healy, county manager with BioFiltro said, will be the largest of its kind in the nation.
“The system will treat 200,000 gallons of wastewater each day through a filtration process which utilizes worms and produces irrigation grade water, organic fertilizer (worm castings), and animal feed protein,” Healy said. “The energy-efficient treatment system removes up to 99 percent of contaminants from wastewater in just four hours and reduces greenhouse gases by 90 percent.
Healy added the implementing of the innovative wastewater treatment facility has the potential to drastically change the dairy industry.
The Washington State Dairy Products Commission and Royal Dairy at 11792 Road 12,5 SW in Royal City are hosting the ribbon cutting ceremony. From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
On hand to explain the ins and outs the BioFiltro wastewater treatment include CEO of BioFiltro, Matias Sjoren, Royal Dairy owner Austin Allred and Air Quality Extension Specialist U.C. Davis Professor Dr. Frank Mitloehner, who has been working with this technology for several years and will be traveling to attend the ceremony and provide a detailed presentation regarding the system’s benefits to air quality.
