Othello School District seeks community input
Othello School District board members want to hear from you. Following an extensive facilities planning effort that has included several publicly held meetings this past year, the board of directors are considering a February 2018 bond measure to address overcrowding issues, and would like the community’s input via an online survey.
Two high priority needs are on the table. The first is a new K-5 elementary and a6-8 middle school with shared core space located on an 80-acre parcel at 7th and Lee Road. The second need calls for the remodeling and expansion of Othello High School, which would include a 1500 seat capacity auditorium along with a larger athletic complex on the property. The estimated costs of the two projects range between $55-$65 million and hinge on the resolution of the state Capito Budget, which impacts school funding.
The Othello School District Board is considering running two bonds to finance the projects and is seeking feedback from the community. Running one bond according to board members, would delay the vote on the high school expansion and remodel. The Board is also wanting to know if community members think the 1500 seat capacity auditorium and athletic complex should be included in the bond or if it should run a separate bond for the two projects?
