Garbage a problem for city's recycling program

OTHELLO – Some people who use the City of Othello’s recycling program are causing problems by mixing trash with the recyclables.

City Clerk Debbie Kudrna reminds residents that the recycling site is for recyclable materials only. As an example of the problems, she cited newspapers delivered in plastic shopping bags.

“We can’t recycle the bags,” she said. “This causes the entire container to be considered garbage, and we cannot recycle it.”

The recycling site at East Hemlock and Third is provided by the City and Consolidated Disposal Services, Inc. Acceptable recyclables include newspapers, aluminum cans and cardboard.

There are designated containers for each type of recyclable. And the service is of no cost to residents.

However, Kudrna reminds, these containers are for recyclables generated in households. They are not intended for use by commercial businesses.

“Commercial businesses may contact local recycling companies in the area to arrange for commercial recycling opportunities.” Kudrna said.

In another reminder, Kudrna said unauthorized use of the city’s disposal services can result in a fine up to $500 for each unauthorized occurrence.
